How to Disable Uconnect Features the Correct Way?
You cannot disable the whole Uconnect system at once; you’ll have to replace it with an aftermarket unit. But let me tell you this voice assistance has actually been proven beneficial for the drivers. Nevertheless, if you don’t want to do that, then the only option here is to disconnect different sections of Uconnect.
Here is how:
Method 1: Disabling Uconnect Navigation
The GPS system of Uconnect gives you maps, traffic data, and many more through the satellite system. If your car gets stolen or towed, you can trace your car thanks to the integrated GPS system. However, if you don’t want the satellite to have your location, then you can turn off the Uconnect navigation system.
Here is the process of doing this:
Step 1: Start and Park the Car
To access the Uconnect, first, start the engine. Then park your car with the engine running.
Step 2: Access the Settings
In most cars, the Uconnect system is installed in the head unit of the dashboard. Uconnect 5, 8.4, and next-gen 4 come with a touchscreen facility. Most modern cars are equipped with either one of those systems.
Now go to your Uconnect menu by tapping the Uconnect icon, and from there, select privacy and settings.
Step 3: Disabling Features
From there, you have to go to the location service or something similar along the line. There, you will see a turn-off tracking option. Once you press that, a message will pop up asking whether you want to confirm your choice or not.
Press yes. It’s a good idea to reset your Uconnect by turning off the vehicle and igniting it again.
Method 2: Disconnecting In-car Entertainment
In-car entertainment can be connected manually or through a phone. You can even play streaming apps through the phone. But if you want to spend some quality family time while driving or just want to give your child a time-out, then you can disable this service.
Here is the process:
Step 1: Disconnecting App
What I do in this case is that I often disconnect the Uconnect app. You can do it, too, by simply turning off the Bluetooth from your phone.
Step 2: Disabling the Rare Monitor
Now, if you want to disconnect just one rear seat monitor, you can do that, too. Here, you have to remove the plastic cover from the back of the monitor and unplug the two cords.
Method 3: Deactivating Weather Alert
I always disable the weather alert in my Uconnect. Frankly, I have my phone for this. If you want to deactivate it, too, then you have to follow these steps:
Step 1: Unselect Weather Map Options
First, go to the travel link. There, you will see a bunch of options. From there, click the weather map. Once there, you will see a few options on the right side of the screen. Now, deselect all those options.
Step 2: Disable Weather from Radio
In the left corner of the screen, you will see the radio option. Go to that option and select SXN. From there, you need to go to the browse option. It’s just under the SXN button. A menu will pop up, and in the left corner, you will find a scroll-down button.
Scroll down, and you will find the weather option. A select city & weather report option will pop up. If any city is selected, then deselect it. That should do the trick
Replacing the Uconnect System
Now, if you want to change the whole Uconnect system, you can do it too. However, you will lose many safety and backup feathers. If your car key fob is not working in cold weather, then you could take the assistance of Uconnect to open your car doors digitally.
However, if you are set on getting a new informative system, then you can follow these steps:
Step 1: Access the Mounting Hardware
The first thing you have to do here is disconnect the battery line. Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive one. After that, you must access the mounting hardware for the upper console trim.
For that, you have to pull back the kick panel on both sides of the center console. Now, pull on the trim to release it from the console.
Step 2: Unscrew The Infotainment Bezel
Once that’s done, pull the trim plate towards you to release it. You can now easily remove that. At this point, you can clearly see two screws keeping the bezel in place.
Unscrew that and remove the upper trim cover. Now, if you pull the bezel from the bottom, it should come right off. The bezel should have a wire connected to it; you need to remove that, too.
Step 3: Unscrew the Infotainment System
Now the Bazel is out of the way, you can proceed to take out the infotainment system. There should be four screws on four sides of the system. Unbolt those screws and disconnect the antenna cable and wiring harness from the back of the system.
Step 4: Replacing
Now, you can replace the Uconnect with any aftermarket unit. Just make sure that the unit is compatible with your car. The assistance system by Sawowkuya goes with almost any cardboard. That is an option you can look at.
The slow circle to calibrate notification sometimes pops up in the dashboard after restarting. Temporary battery disconnection sometimes does that. Make a few circles with your car to align the compass.
Conclusion
You got the idea of how to disable Uconnect, right? You can disable its different features from the settings and radio options or customize it through your phone. If you are old school, you can replace the touch system with a non-touch infotainment system.
A word of caution here: If you are new to this, then always read the car and Uconnect manual carefully. If possible, for your first few tries, consult with a technician. Watch how they manage the situation, then attempt it yourself.
